Trump Supporters Divided Over Immigration Policy
Divergent views on immigration policy within America’s future administration have led to a splintering among supporters of newly elected President Donald Trump. This was reported by Business Insider.
It has been noted that Trump supporters' opinions on immigration do not align with some representatives from Silicon Valley, a hub for the high-tech industry in the U.S. The former, led by Elon Musk, support the practice of issuing H-1B special visas, which allow American companies to hire highly skilled professionals from other countries. Musk, who was born in South Africa, has also stated that “thanks to the H-1B visa, he and many other necessary people who created SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that strengthen America are in the country.” Musk has previously voiced support for legal immigration but acknowledged that bureaucratic hurdles make legal entry into the U.S. much more difficult than illegal entry.
Among Trump’s more conservative supporters are some, including former Congressman Matt Gaetz and far-right political activist Laura Loomer, who are more extreme and accuse major tech companies of abusing the immigration system. In their view, foreign professionals are taking jobs away from American citizens.
The migration crisis is now a key issue in inter-party conflicts within the U.S. Trump has previously stated that following his inauguration, he intends to carry out the largest operation to deport illegal migrants in American history. Trump's inauguration will take place on January 20.
