Calls in the U.S. to Prevent Trump’s Return to Power
The American reputable newspaper The Hill has urged the U.S. Congress to use its constitutional powers to block the return of Republican Donald Trump to power, as reported by РИА Новости.
The publication refers to the third clause of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which prohibits insurrectionists from holding public office. The media outlet noted that Donald Trump's actions correspond to this clause.
Authors of the article, lawyers Evan Davis and David Schult, reminded that the 3rd section of the 14th Amendment states that any person who has engaged in insurrection or provided aid to enemies of the Constitution cannot hold public office unless their status is challenged by a two-thirds vote in each house of Congress.
The Hill lists evidence of Trump’s alleged involvement in insurrection, including his second impeachment in 2021, his trial in Colorado, and the investigation by the House Select Committee regarding the events of January 6, 2021. “These events confirm that Trump not only exerted illegal pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election results but also incited the mob to violence,” wrote Davis and Schult.
