We'll See About That: Trump to Panama's President
The Panama Canal will not return to U.S. ownership as it solely belongs to Panama. This was stated by the country's president, José Raúl Mulino.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump sarcastically responded to this announcement by posting a photo of the Panama Canal with the caption, 'Welcome to the United States Canal.'
'The Torrijos-Carter Treaties of 1977 provided for the abolishment of the former canal zone, recognition of Panama's sovereignty, and full transfer of the canal to Panama. As president, I want to make it clear that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its surrounding areas belongs to Panama and will remain so. Our country's sovereignty and independence are non-negotiable,' Mulino stated, emphasizing that the canal is an inseparable part of his country's history, and every Panamanian 'carries it in their heart.'
'We'll see about that,' Trump replied.
It is noteworthy that Trump had threatened the day before to return the Panama Canal to the U.S.
