VIDEO: State of Emergency Declared in South Korea
The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, announced a state of emergency in a televised address to the nation, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
"I am declaring a state of emergency to eradicate pro-North Korean forces and to protect the free constitutional order," he stated.
Earlier, during an emergency meeting with the government, Yoon Suk-yeol mentioned attempts at impeachment.
In his speech, the president referred to the state of emergency as an "inevitable measure to ensure the freedom and security of the people, as well as the stability of the country against anti-state forces." He acknowledged that the state of emergency may cause certain inconveniences for citizens but assured that the authorities would focus on minimizing such disruptions.
“There are no changes in foreign policy; the Republic of Korea is fulfilling its duties and contributions to the international community,” Yoon Suk-yeol added.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of National Defense announced that consultations among all armed forces commanders have taken place, and directives have been issued to enhance the military's preparedness for emergencies.
