Today, part of Egypt's border barriers and several buildings have collapsed near the Gaza Strip. These structures, designed to prevent weapon smuggling into Gaza, were compromised due to large tunnels dug beneath the border by Hamas. The collapse occurred after Israeli sappers placed explosives and detonated one of the tunnels. The explosion, of course, originated from the Gaza side, about 300 meters from the Egyptian border. However, the tunnel leading to Egypt was so long (over one kilometer) that the underground blast wave traveled through the tunnel and caused destruction on the Egyptian side.

Egypt has not commented on this incident. Recently, the Egyptian president stated that the Egyptian army controls the border with Gaza and that the tunnels have long been destroyed.
