Video: Will Arush Arushanyan be detained or not? Minasian responds
The Mayor of Goris, Arush Arushanyan, is facing questions about whether he will be detained or not. After a cabinet meeting, Justice Minister Grigor Minasian suggested that it is best to wait for the court session and not rush into conclusions. "The lawyers are raising questions that I personally do not agree with, but since we have an ongoing court case, let’s wait for the session on September 3-4 to understand," Minasian stated.
According to him, during the first week of September, the court will review the petition presented by the Probation Service to impose imprisonment on Mayor Arush Arushanyan.
The Minister emphasized that the crucial aspect of this process is that it is ultimately the court that will make the decision.
It is noteworthy that the probation service has approached the Goris community council, informing them that the community leader should be dismissed. The 14 members participating in the council meeting unanimously noted that the request falls outside the council's functions, indicating that it is impossible to organize this process by the council.
Mayor Arush Arushanyan is accused of abuse of power, self-justice, and intentionally causing harm to another person's health. The court ruling has come into force, but Arushanyan has not complied with one of the points—resigning from his position as the head of the community. According to the court ruling, he is barred from holding office for five years.
In turn, the probation service has petitioned the court to replace Arush Arushanyan's punishment with imprisonment. The case is currently under the jurisdiction of Judge Varsenik Melkonyan of the Syunik regional court. The hearing is scheduled for September 3.
