Decisions Like This Will Undoubtedly Cause Serious Harm to European Consumers' Interests, Peskov

The decision of Kyiv not to extend the gas transit agreement with Russia will seriously harm the interests of European consumers. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, to reporters.

On August 27, Vladimir Zelensky announced that Ukraine would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia, which is set to expire at the end of 2024.

“Such decisions by the Ukrainian side will undoubtedly cause serious harm to the interests of European consumers, who still wish to obtain Russian gas, which is more guaranteed and economically more affordable compared to other supplies that will likely come from the U.S. They will simply have to pay more, thus making their industry less competitive,” said Peskov.

In July, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that Russia is ready to continue gas supplies to Europe via Ukrainian territory even after 2024, provided that Kyiv decides to extend the agreement.

Previously, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized Moscow's willingness to cooperate in the energy sector with countries interested in this.
