The Number of Displaced Persons from Artsakh Ranked Among the Highest in UN Report
By the end of 2023, the number of refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide who have left their homes due to human rights violations, war, and violence reached 117.3 million, with projections for April 2024 estimating over 120 million. According to the annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), this figure increased by 8.8 million people in 2023.
The report's authors emphasize that out of the 117.3 million individuals, 43.4 million are refugees who have crossed international borders, 68.3 million are internally displaced, and the remaining belong to other categories. The most significant displacements in 2023 occurred in Sudan, where over 6 million people were forced to leave their homes, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo with more than 3.8 million, and in the Gaza Strip, where between October and December 2023, the number of displaced persons reached 1.7 million.
In Myanmar, this number has grown by 1.3 million over the past year, while in Afghanistan, it increased by 740,000, and in Syria, by 174,000. Additionally, 141,900 people fled to Armenia in September 2023 following clashes in the South Caucasus region.
