North Korean Soldiers Cross the Border with South Korea

About 20 North Korean soldiers have crossed the demarcation line, but returned after warning shots were fired from South Korea. According to Yonhap, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the North Korean soldiers crossed the line within the confines of the demilitarized zone in the central area around 12:30 PM on June 9. After warning shots were fired, they returned to their side of the border.

The JCS believes that the North Korean troops, who were carrying out a mission in the demilitarized zone, did not plan to cross the border, as they returned immediately after the warning. It has been clarified that the area is now overgrown with grass and shrubs, making the demarcation line’s markers difficult to see.

The situation at the border has escalated since the end of May, when North Korea released hundreds of balloons filled with trash and manure into South Korean territory. Pyongyang explained this as a response to the balloon launches containing propaganda leaflets criticizing the North Korean leadership.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, from the night of May 28 to the morning of June 2, North Korea sent 15 tons of waste toward South Korea. Pyongyang claims that South Korean activists have released balloons with leaflets against the North Korean leadership, as well as cash, rice, or flash drives with Korean dramas.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff has demanded that North Korea “immediately cease its inhumane and vulgar actions.”
