Germany Decides to Increase the Number of Reservists
The Bundeswehr is facing a severe personnel shortage, while the threat has increased due to the war in Ukraine. Now, the German Ministry of Defense is developing plans to significantly increase the number of reservists, reports Der Spiegel.
The goal for soldiers is to create a so-called core reserve of up to 60,000 men and women, who will be prepared and qualified for this status for permanent missions in the future. Currently, there are about 44,000 core soldiers.
The new reservists, who will include both men and women, will need to be trained similarly to how it was during the Cold War to supplement active troops in combat operations. According to the law, about 800,000 people can be called up for military service.
