Georgian Parliament Set to Adopt 19 Laws Against Non-Traditional Relationships

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has presented a package of legislation that will significantly restrict the rights of representatives and organizations of the LGBTQ community in the country during a special briefing held in the parliament's foyer today. This was reported by kommersant.ru.

According to Papuashvili, the legislative package includes amendments to the labor code, civil code, and education legislation. He stated that all 19 bills will be adopted by the parliament in the first reading before the end of the spring session, which means by mid-July. The second and third readings are expected to take place in the autumn.

The proposed legislation will ban the registration of any relationships alternative to marriage between a man and a woman, the adoption of children by same-sex couples, and any medical procedures for changing gender. If surgery is performed abroad, all documents issued in Georgia will reflect the citizen's 'genetic sex.'

Additionally, any 'propaganda' concerning LGBTQ themes will be prohibited in the media. The relevant content in literature and films will also be restricted in both private and public broadcasting companies, libraries, and exhibition spaces.
