‘They Can Call Me Crazy, But God Has Sent Me’: India’s Prime Minister
‘They can call me crazy, but God has sent me’: India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks about his divine destiny.
In an interview with NDTV, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, who is vying for re-election for a third term, stated that he believes God has chosen him to lead the government. Excerpts from the interview were published on the channel's website today, May 25.
“Some may call me crazy, but I am convinced that Paramatma (God) has sent me for a certain purpose. Once my work reaches that purpose, it will unify, which is why I am completely devoted to God,” Modi remarked.
The Prime Minister noted that God guides him to do many things, but “does not reveal his cards; he simply makes me do something.” “And I cannot just call him directly to ask what’s next,” he added.
Modi made these comments following the conclusion of parliamentary elections, which are being held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The major contender for victory is the ruling nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which Modi, 73, leads. Election results will be announced on June 4.
As reported by the Financial Times, Modi is campaigning as a protector of Hindus, meaning the majority of the country’s population, promising to elevate India’s status in the world. At the same time, international observers and critics of the Prime Minister believe that democracy in India is experiencing a severe decline and that authorities continue to exert constant pressure on the opposition and independent journalists.
