Armenian Parliament Has Not Received a Letter from Russia: Speaker’s Spokesperson
The Armenian National Assembly has not received any letter from Russia. This was announced to NEWS.am by the spokesperson for the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Ghulian.
Yesterday, Grigory Karasin, the chairman of the Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs, sent a letter to the National Assembly of Armenia, proposing to clarify the parliamentarians' position regarding the statements made by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Allen Simonian, at the conference of the Presidents of EU Parliaments held in Spain on April 22.
“We have received numerous inquiries from our citizens seeking clarification on whether A. Simonian's openly anti-Russian statements reflect the official position of the National Assembly of Armenia. In this regard, I would ask you to clarify on whose behalf the President of the Armenian Parliament spoke at the mentioned event, as well as to inform us about the extent to which his assessments correspond to the allied relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia, as well as the centuries-old ties of friendship between Armenia and our peoples,” reads the text of Grigory Karasin's letter.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, instructed the senators to prepare and send an inquiry to the Armenian Parliament regarding Speaker Allen Simonian's “anti-Russian statements.” It is worth noting that during the conference in Spain, Simonian stated that given that “the focus of the conference is Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Middle Eastern conflict,” he wants to affirm that Armenia “decisively supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as Moldova, Georgia, Cyprus, and the territorial integrity of all countries.”
