UN Security Council Meeting on Israeli Strike on Iranian Consulate in Damascus
At the request of Russia, a UN Security Council meeting will be held on Tuesday regarding the Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, announced Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN.
"In continuation of the Iranians' letter, we have requested a public session of the UN Security Council, which Malta's presidency has scheduled for April 2 at 3:00 PM New York time (11:00 PM Yerevan time)," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Reports indicate that Israel targeted the building of the Iranian consulate located southwest of Damascus. In a letter from Iran's permanent mission to the UN addressed to the organization's Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, it is stated: "Attacks on consular premises are a gross violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the fundamental principle of diplomatic immunity."
Tehran has announced the death of two generals from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as five assistants of the generals. According to the IRGC, the strike resulted in the deaths of seven Iranian representatives.
The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called the strike a "violation of international conventions," according to Iranian media. Tehran will respond decisively to Israel's bombardment, stated Iran's ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari.
