Academic City to Feature Railway, Metro, and Tram, Says Minister
The Academic City will include a railway station and dedicated tram lines. This was announced today during an extraordinary session of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth, and Sports by the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Zhanna Andreasyan.
“Transportation will be ensured through several means: railway and metro. A tram system is also planned. You know that the North-South highway runs near the Academic City, and there is also a well-developed road network. The draft of these roads is a separate project that is currently under discussion and has also been preliminarily presented to the government,” said Andreasyan.
She informed that the main urban plan for the Academic City will be fully developed by June. Meanwhile, work is underway on the design of the road network and necessary infrastructure.
“A railway line passes through the territory of the Academic City, which is currently used for freight transport. We intend to use it for passenger purposes. We want to make the railway the main transport hub of the Academic City, which will start from the 'Sasuntsi Davit' station and go towards the Academic City,” she stated.
The minister also revealed that, in the first phase, in addition to the railway station, the design of the Academic City stadium and a multifunctional concert hall will be developed.
It is worth noting that the Government of Armenia plans to build an academic city and relocate universities and research universities there, consolidating them on a single platform. The 17th district of Yerevan and the territory of 'Hayfilm' will be allocated for the Academic City.
