Judge Who Issued Arrest Warrant for Putin Elected New President of ICC
The new president of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is Judge Tomoko Akane. Akane is one of the judges who issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"It is a great honor for me to be elected by my fellow judges as the president of the International Criminal Court. At this difficult time, the Court requires stable, cooperative, and unified leadership," Akane stated.
She indicated her intention to focus on developing dialogue among the Court's bodies, as well as reinforcing dialogue with participating states and those that have yet to ratify the Rome Statute.
She will lead the ICC until 2027.
