Orbán Threatened with Losing Voting Rights in EU If He Refuses to Support Ukraine
The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has been threatened with losing his voting rights in the EU if he refuses to support financial assistance for Ukraine. According to Corriere della Sera, the key issue in reaching a consensus is not just the aid itself, but the risk of creating a precedent for division within the EU.
Ultimately, Orbán did not want to become the 'white crow' of the EU. The publication notes that the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has played a significant role in the negotiations, possessing similar positions to Orbán on various issues. However, the Hungarian Prime Minister's 'capitulation' was seen as a result of the collective process and the threat of sanctions.
It is mentioned that Orbán, who has agreed to the transfer of funds to Ukraine, had previously been blocking it since December.
