By ratifying the Rome Statute, Armenia has contributed to the strengthening of international law: Foreign Minister

The Eastern Partnership has contributed to the democratic transition process in Armenia. This was stated by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan at the Eastern Partnership ministerial meeting.

The minister emphasized that Armenia has made a clear decision to choose an irreversible path of democratization and reforms. He noted, “Despite all the challenges we have faced in recent years, the process of democratization and the implementation of our ambitious reform agenda has never stopped for a moment in Armenia. And Armenia is determined to continue this path with significant support from the European Union.”

He also highlighted that the ratification of the Rome Statute in Armenia was a recent manifestation of this determination. “By joining the International Criminal Court, Armenia has contributed to the strengthening of international law, while reaffirming its sovereign right to make decisions based on its own national interests,” he stated.

The minister welcomed the European Commission's decision to recommend that the European Council begin accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine and grant candidate status to Georgia. “This decision is commendable not only for the Armenian government but also for the people of Armenia, who also have European aspirations. We believe that these new developments should not lead to a further decline in interest towards the Eastern Partnership, but should serve as an additional bridge to welcome progress for this trio of partners who have steadfast intentions and determination to get closer to the European Union,” the Foreign Minister added.

He also remarked, “We are committed not only to continue this path, but also to approach the European Union as much as the European Union considers possible.”
