Iran Begins Construction of New Nuclear Power Plant
Iran has begun construction of a new nuclear power plant in the country's west, named "Karun." The power capacity will amount to 300 MW, announced Mohammad Eslami, head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, on Wednesday.
“The construction works for the ‘Karun’ plant have started, contracts have been signed for the internal infrastructure construction and the provision of equipment for the power plant. The new nuclear power plant will have a capacity of 300 MW of energy,” Eslami's words were quoted by the Tasnim agency.
Currently, Iran has only one nuclear power plant in Bushehr, which is being built with the support of Russia. The first block of the plant, completed with the participation of the Russian Federation, was connected to Iran's national energy system in September 2011. Construction of the second power block is ongoing, and a contract for the construction of the third power block has been signed.
