Russian Peacekeepers Helped Avoid More Casualties During Escalation of Conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, Shoigu Says
The selfless and professional actions of Russian peacekeepers helped avoid more casualties during the escalation of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was stated by the Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu, according to TASS.
“I want to express my gratitude to our boys—the Russian peacekeepers—for their selfless and professional actions that helped avoid more casualties. The peacekeepers provided comprehensive medical assistance to the wounded and those in need,” he said during a meeting with the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces.
Shoigu noted that with the assistance of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, a modular camp equipped with modern facilities and a surgical assistance capability, along with an operational module including a resuscitation unit, had been established.
“The special medical squad includes experienced doctors from various specialties,” emphasized the Russian Defense Minister.
He stated that through the mediation of the Russian peacekeeping forces, more than 98,000 peaceful residents were evacuated from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, including 32,000 children.
“To prevent civilian casualties, it was decided to evacuate and accommodate civilians in observation posts and base camps. With the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, the warring parties succeeded in reaching an agreement on a complete ceasefire. A total of 98,000 peaceful residents were transferred from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, including approximately 32,000 children,” he said during the meeting with the military leadership of Russia.
According to Shoigu, nearly 300 tons of humanitarian cargo have been delivered via the routes of Aghdam (Aknak) and Lachin.
“Russian military personnel participated in extinguishing the fire that broke out in the fuel depot in Stepanakert,” he added.
