Video: The highest danger level, red level, declared on the Greek island of Rhodes; fires continue to rage
The Greek Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection has declared a red level, the highest danger level, on the island of Rhodes. Due to extreme heat, forest fires have been raging there for nearly a week.
The authorities in Greece are currently trying to contain 82 forest fires, 64 of which broke out the previous day, on July 23. Besides Rhodes, the threat level has also increased on the island of Crete, as reported by ERT News. The threat level on Crete is currently at the fourth level of five possible danger levels.
During the weekend, more than 30,000 people have been evacuated from Rhodes. This is the largest rescue operation ever conducted in Greece. British and German airlines Jet2, TUI Airways, and TUI have canceled all flights to Rhodes. Tour operators are requesting airlines to send empty planes to evacuate tourists wishing to leave the island.
