Kazakhstan to Have a Day of Mourning Tomorrow After Forest Fires Claim 14 Lives

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has declared June 12 as a day of mourning in memory of those who lost their lives in the massive forest fires. This information was reported by RIA Novosti.

The fire erupted in Kazakhstan's Abai region due to a lightning strike. As a result of the fire, 14 employees of the 'Semey Ormany' reserve have died. According to the latest data, more than 60,000 hectares of land have burned. Over 300 units of equipment have been involved in firefighting efforts, alongside nearly 1,500 people and 11 helicopters.

President Tokayev has visited the Abai region and extended his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. “I came specifically to express my sympathies to you. This is a great tragedy for the entire nation. Stay strong during this difficult time. I share in your grief,” said Tokayev.

He instructed the government to provide temporary assistance to the victims' families, both financial and otherwise. “If you have any questions for the government or for me personally, let me know. We will carry out all of them. Of course, we cannot bring back the deceased, but I want to say that those responsible for this tragedy will be held accountable under the law,” emphasized the President.

He highlighted that Monday will be officially declared a day of mourning and stated that a consultation will be held to draw lessons from the current situation.
