Another Example of Irresponsible Behavior: The U.S. on Belarus Receiving Russian Nuclear Weapons
The United States strongly condemns the transfer of Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus, but currently sees no reason to revise its nuclear readiness, said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during a press briefing today.
“I will not speak to any facts or assessments that we may have, but I will say that we strongly condemn this agreement; this is another example of irresponsible behavior that we are seeing from Russia,” he stated.
He reiterated that the U.S. sees no reason to change its approach to nuclear readiness.
Earlier, on May 25, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that the transfer of Russian tactical nuclear weapons to the republic had already begun. In response to a clarifying question about whether tactical nuclear weapons were already present in Belarus, Lukashenko said he would clarify this after returning to the republic.
It was reported this morning that the defense ministers of Belarus and Russia, Viktor Khrenin and Sergei Shoigu, signed documents in Minsk that outline the procedures for storing Russian non-strategic nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory in special facilities.
