Charles Michel: 'There is a proposal on the table to solve the issue'

The EU is hopeful that China will play a crucial role in resolving the situation in Ukraine and positively influence Russia. This statement was made by European Council President Charles Michel in response to a question regarding the visit of China’s special representative for foreign affairs, Li Hwei, to Russia, Ukraine, and European countries. This was reported by the Interfax agency.

“We sincerely hope that China will play a positive role (in resolving the situation in Ukraine),” Michel stated at a press conference held on Monday.

In Michel's opinion, Beijing could persuade Moscow to halt military operations in Ukraine and “respect the UN Charter.” For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that China could play a significant role due to its influence over Russia. She emphasized that in the matter of resolution, it is first necessary to listen to the Ukrainian side.

“There is a proposal on the table to solve the issue. This is President Zelensky’s proposal, and these are the foundations we need to work on,” von der Leyen said.
