Photos: The "Great and Small Syunik" Monument at the Border of Syunik and Artsakh Comes Under Azerbaijani Control

On March 29, 2023, following the closure of the former route of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan and the full operation of a new route in the western part starting in early April (passing through the villages of Kornidzor and Tegh), the "Great and Small Syunik" monument, also known as the "Mother Homeland," along with the villages of Zabukh and Jagazur (Zagadzor), has come under Azerbaijani control.

The monument was built in 2004 with the idea of uniting Great and Small Syunik (historically, Small Syunik refers to Artsakh) by architect Sevada Zakaryan, initiated by the former governor of Syunik Suren Khachatryan and funded by Maxim Hakobyan, chairman of the board of directors of the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine.

On April 3, 2023, the Armenian side relocated the cross-stone, marking a unique exception where a monument is removed from its historical landscape and separated from its entirety for the sake of preservation.

Azerbaijani Telegram channels are already shouting about the impending demolition and destruction of the monument. However, as demonstrated by this and many preceding cases, Azerbaijan is unmistakably carrying out cultural genocide by violating its obligations under international conventions.
