Public Hearings on the Operation of the Litchk Mine Fail
Today, residents of Meghri blocked the entrance to the town hall as they oppose the exploitation of the Litchk mine. During a meeting with locals, Mayor Bagrat Zakaryan stated that the people would decide by legal means whether or not the Litchk mine would be operated. The mayor urged those gathered not to obstruct the public hearing process and to conduct it in a civilized manner; however, the citizens remained resolute.
The public discussion scheduled in Meghri regarding the extraction of minerals from the Litchk copper mine in the Syunik region did not take place as residents would not allow the organizers to enter the town hall. The mayor declared the public discussion as not having occurred, and representatives of the organization announced they would prepare for the next discussion.
A representative from the Litchk mine also stated that although the public discussion did not take place, they heard the opinions of the community and it would be their duty to respond to all questions concerning the public's concerns.
