Mirzoyan: EU Mission in Our Region Viewed as a Valuable Tool

Ararat Mirzoyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, stated that Armenia considers the deployment of the EU civilian mission on the Armenian side of the international border with Azerbaijan as a valuable tool for enhancing security on the ground and contributing to peace and stability in the region. This remark was made during a press conference following his meeting with Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu.

“The dispatch of EU observers to the Armenian side of the international border between Armenia and Azerbaijan immediately after Azerbaijan's aggression against Armenia in September 2022, and later the establishment of a long-term EU civilian observation mission, signifies the EU's significant engagement in our region. We view it as a valuable tool for improving the security of the people on the ground and fostering peace and stability in the region,” emphasized Mirzoyan.

He added that Armenia appreciates Romania's valuable contribution to the relevant discussions within the EU.

Mirzoyan also shared that he and his Romanian counterpart discussed a wide range of bilateral cooperation topics. The foreign ministers signed a joint action plan for 2023-2024.

It was previously reported that Mirzoyan would be on a working visit to Romania on April 3-4.

Regarding the EU observers, since February 20, 2023, a European mission consisting of 100 personnel has been deployed in Armenia with a two-year mandate. Although the EU mission is considered civilian, 50 of them are gendarmes.
