Blinken Calls Ceasefire Proposals in Ukraine a 'Cynical Trap'
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that the immediate ceasefire proposals in Ukraine could be a "cynical trap" that would freeze the conflict. He made this declaration during a virtual meeting with foreign partners discussing the prospects for achieving a "just and lasting peace in Ukraine." His remarks were quoted by RIA Novosti.
U.S. authorities have not concealed their negative stance on the Chinese plan, which also proposes a Russo-Ukrainian ceasefire.
"What may seem ostensibly attractive (who wouldn’t want the guns to fall silent) could be a very cynical trap that we need to be extremely careful about," Blinken said.
The Secretary added that a supposed ceasefire would allow Russia to consolidate its gains, buy time to rest, replenish its supplies, and re-launch its offensives.
It is worth noting that the Chinese government proposed a peace plan in February consisting of 12 points, which includes calls for respecting the legitimate interests of all countries in the field of security and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has mentioned that many points of the Chinese plan could serve as a basis for resolution when the West and Kyiv are ready for it.
