Borrell Admits Opportunities for Sanctions Against Russia Are Nearly Exhausted
Opportunities for the European Union to impose sanctions against Russia are nearly exhausted. This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an interview with Euractiv.
“There are not many options left regarding sanctions,” Borrell said. At the same time, he noted that it would be “strange” if, a year after the escalation of the situation in Ukraine, “many options remained.”
“We are approaching the last steps of the ladder,” the European diplomacy chief commented.
He believes that the EU should now focus on increasing financial and military support for Ukraine.
Since last February, the European Union has imposed ten packages of sanctions against Russia. The Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the country will overcome the pressure from Western sanctions and continues to do so to this day.
It is worth recalling that early on the morning of February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine at the request of Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
