Minaret Collapses Following Earthquake in Turkey

A moderate earthquake struck the western province of Izmir, Turkey, on November 4, causing panic among residents and resulting in the collapse of a local mosque's minaret. This was reported by Hurriyet Daily News.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority announced that the earthquake occurred at 03:29 in the Buca district of Izmir, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale. Several aftershocks were felt in nearby regions.

At least three people were injured while fleeing from their homes in panic, with one victim's condition being reported as serious, according to Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu via Twitter.

Izmir Mayor Tunç Soyer stated that there were no reports of significant damage apart from the collapsed minaret. “Aside from the panic, fear, and concern among our residents, we have not received any negative reports,” Soyer said.

The tremors came just days after Izmir commemorated the victims of the 6.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred on October 30, 2020, which claimed 117 lives.
