Turkey Unable to Repay Gas Debt to War-torn Russia
The leader of Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has criticized the government's economic policies, as reported by ermenihaber.am.
"Turkey tells a country at war, Russia, that 'I cannot repay your debt.' This means they cannot pay the gas amount that has already been taken from the people. And who can't they pay? To someone who is at war. Turkey has always been a serious state and earned respect. Now, however, everything has been destroyed," the opposition party leader complained on Twitter, adding that they effectively have a decayed system and a crumbling palace authority.
Kılıçdaroğlu's comments followed reports that an anonymous employee from Turkey's state oil and gas company, BOTAŞ, told Bloomberg that due to high energy prices, Turkey has requested to postpone part of its gas payments to Russia until 2024.
