BMW to Halt Factory Operations if Gas Supplies from Russia Cease
If gas supplies from Russia cease, BMW will shut down its factory operations. This was announced by Milan Nedelkovich, a member of BMW's board of directors, as reported by RBC.
According to him, the German industry accounts for around 37% of natural gas consumption in the country. Moreover, Nedelkovich expressed concerns that not only BMW might halt production but the entire industrial sector could be affected due to the interruption of supplies.
The company's chief manager also added that in 2021, natural gas comprised 54% of BMW's total energy consumption. Nedelkovich simultaneously noted that the company has already chosen the direction of developing alternative sources and is investing in solar, geothermal, and hydrogen energy, which will allow for reducing dependence on natural gas in the future.
The new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, will become the first automobile facility in the world to operate completely without fossil fuels, with a focus on solar energy.
