What Weather to Expect in April: Gagik Surenyan Discusses Next Month's Forecast
In the Republic of Armenia, the air temperature in April is expected to be 1 to 2 degrees above the climatic norm, with precipitation amounts close to normal and slightly less. Gagik Surenyan, deputy director of the Armenian Ministry of Environment’s Hydro-Meteorological and Monitoring Center, stated this to journalists, according to Armenpress.
Regarding the weather conditions observed in the country over the last week, the expert noted that although they were forecasted, they still took professionals by surprise. “What we experienced was unprecedented in the entire history of our meteorological records. During this time of year, in mid-March, there were areas in the republic, particularly in the Syunik and Tavush valley regions, which are considered the warmest parts of our republic, where snowfall reached up to one meter in just two days. Additionally, in the mountainous areas of the republic, the unprecedented snowstorm led to accumulations reaching six meters in certain regions,” Surenyan noted.
He emphasized that such weather conditions in the third decade of March were unprecedented in the entire meteorological history. He added that the abundant snow would have a significant positive impact on agriculture, reservoir levels, and the stability of river flows. The specialist detailed that this weather situation was primarily caused by the clash of arctic cold air currents coming from Western Siberia and humid warm air flows from the Mediterranean Sea. These collided right within our republic, resulting in the formation of a powerful atmospheric front, which caused such intense and abundant snowfall.
