Clarification on the Work Being Done by Russian Border Guards on the Meghri-Akarak Road
As we previously reported, Auroranews received alerts from residents of Meghri. They noted that barriers are being installed on the Meghri-Akarak road and that the area will be monitored by Russian soldiers.
Citizens say they do not see anything wrong with this so far, but they have fears that this is all being done under a corridor logic, and Armenia will ultimately allocate territory for the much-discussed corridor.
Auroranews contacted the Armenian government for clarification on the information. The government directed us to the Syunik Regional Administration, which recently clarified: “The mobile barriers by the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation deployed in Armenia have been updated near the Meghri community. The existence of barriers is not a new phenomenon; they were installed earlier and do not constitute control checkpoints. The utilization of mobile barriers stems from the functions of the border service of the Russian Federal Security Service.”
In response to our clarifying question about whether this is occurring within the framework of “corridor logic,” Syunik Regional Administration spokesperson Armine Avagyan replied that it is “naturally not related to the corridor.”
We also remember that in connection with this topic, we spoke with the mayor of Meghri, Bagrat Zakaryan, who stated that the Russians are carrying out the work but politically qualified the issue and did not respond to whether the concerns are justified regarding the possibility that all of this is happening within the framework of “corridor logic.”
