Security Forces Join Protesters in Aktau, Kazakhstan
In Aktau, Kazakhstan, members of the security forces have sided with protesters. Eyewitnesses are sharing videos from the scene on social media, as reported by "Izvestia." According to the protesters, law enforcement officials have declared that they cannot stand against the people.
In another video circulating on social media, protesters have seized a military truck, forcing the security personnel to exit the vehicle. In Almaty, participants in the protests have attacked an ambulance. Videos of the incident have surfaced on Telegram channels, showing that the driver convinced the protesters to let the medical personnel through.
During the unrest in Almaty, approximately 500 people have been injured, including 130 women and elderly individuals. A total of 120 vehicles have been burned, including 33 ambulances and fire trucks. The Almaty mayor has stated that radicals and extremists have taken over the city.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the events in Kazakhstan, expressed confidence that the country can resolve its internal issues independently.
Earlier today, Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency in the capital Nur-Sultan, Almaty, the Mangistau region, and others until January 19. He also dismissed the government.
Unrest in Kazakhstan began on January 4 and has continued to this day. On January 2, residents of Aktau and Zhanaozen took to the streets demanding a reduction in fuel prices. The price of gas in Kazakhstan doubled on January 1, increasing from 60 tenge (about 10 rubles) to 120 tenge (about 20 rubles).
Today, protesters stormed the city hall in Almaty and set it on fire. Additionally, they have burned down buildings belonging to the prosecutor's office and the ruling party. Protesters have also occupied the presidential residence in Almaty. Clashes are occurring between police and protesters in the city center.
