Strong Earthquake in Mexico, One Fatality; 1.5 Million People Left Without Power

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 has struck the southwestern Mexican state of Guerrero, with tremors felt in the capital as well. This was reported by the local Seismological Service.

"The earthquake occurred 11 kilometers southeast of Acapulco at 20:47 local time (05:47 Yerevan time) at a depth of ten kilometers," stated a press release.

The governor of Guerrero, Héctor Astudillo, announced one fatality: "I have just been informed that one person has died in Coyuca after being struck by a column," he said, adding that there is currently no information on other casualties or injuries, although authorities are receiving numerous reports of material damage.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the earthquake did not cause destruction in the capital. "The police have conducted three rounds over the city and no damage has been reported," she said. The politician added that some areas are without electricity, but restoration efforts are already underway.

Across the country, one and a half million people are without power, accounting for 13 percent of the total number of consumers. The states most affected include Mexico City, Guerrero, Morelos, and Oaxaca. Citizens have been warned about the potential for aftershocks, as reported by RIA Novosti.
