Authorities Warn Artsakh Residents Against Social Media Fraud
The Economic and Corruption Crimes Prevention Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh urges residents to remain vigilant regarding cases of money theft through fraud.
Igor Ohanyan, head of the Economic and Corruption Crimes Prevention Department, reports that there was a notable increase in such cases during the post-war period, although this has decreased recently.
“Today we still face the challenge of completely eliminating these incidents within our society. Citizens of the Republic of Artsakh are falling victim to scams that steal money through social media, resulting in financial losses,” says Ohanyan.
According to him, criminals call Artsakh residents using unknown phone numbers, first gaining their trust, and then typically offer online buying or selling options, as well as providing online fast loans at low interest rates. Soldiers serving in the Defense Army are also targeted, with scammers suggesting they urgently need money and requesting residents to hand cash to drivers of taxis they send.
There have been cases of money extortion using computer technology as well. Appropriate measures are being taken to uncover such crimes and prevent them in the future.
“We find it necessary to once again appeal to all citizens: Do not fall for these scams, remain vigilant, and immediately report such calls to the Economic and Corruption Crimes Prevention Department or the nearest police station,” emphasizes Igor Ohanyan.
