Does Russia Not Protect Armenians? Arman Abovyan on Russia's Role

The recent statements from the top leadership of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs provide a good opportunity to understand who Armenia's friends are and who its enemies are. This was stated by MP Arman Babajanyan during a meeting of the Armenian National Assembly on May 25.

In response, the Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of the Prosperous Armenia Party, Arman Abovyan, remarked that the flow of anti-Russian propaganda in the Armenian information space these days compels us to recall a few key points that the generators of anti-Russian theses tend to forget.

He specifically disagreed with the widespread opinion that Russia does not protect Armenians and does not take concrete actions, claiming that what has been done is an overly mild response to what has happened or does not correspond at all to the obligations assumed by Moscow.

“Russia, as Armenia's strategic partner, first and foremost acts and moves within the framework of decisions taken by the Armenian authorities. If the authorities have decided that there is no need to fight against the Turks who have invaded our country, then does someone expect that the Russians will say: ‘no, it doesn’t matter. Should we go and fight?’” Abovyan stated.

The MP noted that the Armenian government decided to take a different path, while the Russian authorities declared that Russia, as a partner of Armenia, supports the path chosen by it.
