No 'corridor' issue is under discussion. Mane Gevorgyan denies talks about the 'Meghri Corridor'
There is no discussion of any 'corridor' in the agreements reached between the leaders of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan regarding regional unblocking.
This was stated by the spokesperson for the Prime Minister of Armenia, Mane Gevorgyan, in response to a question from Armenpress regarding discussions and statements about the 'Zangezur or Meghri Corridor'.
Question - What work has been carried out following the meeting of the leaders of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan on January 11, 2021, in Moscow and the joint statement on unblocking transport communications in the region? What phase are the works in?
Answer - Currently, expert subgroups are continuing their work, which focuses on issues related to rail, road, and combined transportation, as well as ensuring transport, including security, border, customs, sanitary, veterinary, phytosanitary, and other types of control. In the context of unblocking existing transportation links in the region, issues related to organizing security, border, customs, and other types of control related to international transport have been discussed within the framework of the normative legal base of the CIS, as well as other multilateral international treaties and conventions. Possible options for the restoration of railway and road infrastructure, their timelines, costs, and technical capabilities are also being discussed. Southern and northern routes, as well as the connecting sections, are being considered according to the discussed directions and routes. The activities of the mentioned subgroups have also been reviewed by the tripartite Working Group, which operates under the joint co-chairmanship of the deputy prime ministers.
Question - How do you comment on the discussions and statements regarding the 'Zangezur or Meghri Corridor'? Is such an issue being discussed?
Answer - Currently, expert groups are focused on assessing the physical possibilities and technical condition of infrastructure in all possible directions. No issue regarding any 'corridor' or 'corridor status' is under discussion. The joint statement of November 9 only mentions the Lachin corridor. The statement of November 9 does not mention any corridor through the territory of the Republic of Armenia. It’s about the reopening of transportation communications in the region, which has been clarified in the joint statement of January 11.
