Italy’s Ambassador Killed in Congo
Italy’s Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Attanasio, has been killed following an attack on a convoy of the United Nations World Food Programme. The information was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier reports indicated that Attanasio had been injured during the militants' assault. Preliminary data suggest that the convoy came under attack near the city of Goma in North Kivu province, close to the border with Rwanda.
As noted by the local portal Actualite, Luca Attanasio, who has served as the ambassador since October 31, 2019, may have been the primary target of the assailants.
