The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmayil Baghaei, has accused the United States of having a "dependency" on sanctions. He noted that the US Secretary of the Treasury takes pride in successfully choking Iran with economic restrictions.

According to Baghaei, such statements, aside from being performative, signal an obsessive dependency on sanctions in Washington. The Iranian diplomat claimed that in the face of incapacity for diplomacy, the US resorts to sanctions, and when those fail, it simply increases their dosage.

He emphasized that this is not a policy, but a habit that has replaced rational thinking and constitutes a dangerous addiction. Baghaei added that Iran has demonstrated over decades that it cannot be stifled by tired slogans. He outlined the real danger as being that American politicians, clinging to this bad habit, might ultimately find themselves deprived of the last viable option for exiting the very crises they have created.
