More than 30,000 Americans Have Left the Republican Party

More than 30,000 individuals have left the Republican Party in the United States over the past week following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. This was reported by the Hill newspaper, citing statistics regarding voter registration and party affiliation changes from several states.

On January 6, supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol after a rally in Washington, interrupting Congress's proceedings for several hours. The unrest resulted in the deaths of five people, including a woman among the demonstrators and a police officer, while three others died from causes unrelated to the violence.

As law enforcement began to confront the participants in the riots, lawmakers were in the process of certifying the results of the Electoral College vote, which confirmed Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election. Once order was restored in the Capitol, both the House of Representatives and the Senate certified Biden's victory.

On January 13, the House of Representatives impeached Trump on charges of inciting the insurrection by a vote of 232 to 197. He became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice by the lower chamber. The Senate postponed discussions on Trump’s impeachment until February 9, with the decision being unanimous, according to RIA Novosti.
