Georgia Denies Involvement in Beirut Explosion

The Georgian Maritime Transport Agency has reported that it has no connection to the tragic explosion that occurred in Beirut. At the same time, it confirmed that in 2013, a ship had transported ammonium nitrate from Batumi to Mozambique, which eventually ended up in Lebanon.

According to RIA Novosti, the Maritime Transport Agency noted that ammonium nitrate is one of the main exports from Georgia, and that the cargo was dispatched from the Port of Batumi on the Rhosus ship, sailing under the flag of Moldova, seven years ago.

"Georgian ports fully comply with international safety standards and are regularly inspected, while the transportation and storage technologies for cargo fall within the jurisdictions of the receiving country, not the exporter," officials stated in Georgia.
