Armenian Foreign Ministry Responds to Discussion of Armenian Genocide in Turkey

The statements made by the President of Turkey justifying the Armenian Genocide and insulting its victims are not new and are manifestations of hate speech, which contribute to the reinforcement of the atmosphere of intolerance towards Armenians in that country. This was noted by the spokesperson for the Armenian Foreign Ministry, Anna Naghdalyan, in response to a question from Armenpress regarding the discussion of the Armenian Genocide topic in Turkey's presidential administration.

In response to the question about how to comment on the fact that the high advisory body of the Turkish presidency convened a meeting under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's leadership, and according to the official statement, discussed the actions that should be taken against “baseless claims against Turkey regarding the events of 1915,” Anna Naghdalyan stated: “The statements made by the President of Turkey justifying the Armenian Genocide and insulting its victims are not new and constitute manifestations of hate speech, which have an impact on maintaining and reinforcing the atmosphere of intolerance towards Armenians in that country. The issue of recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide is not an Armenian-Turkish problem; it is a problem of Turkey and the international community. This is evidenced by numerous statements and actions by Turkey regarding the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by different countries. For us and the international community, the Armenian Genocide is a fact that also served as a basis for the development of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and for the establishment of mechanisms to prevent genocides and crimes against humanity today. Denialism has no future, regardless of who and how it is packaged. No matter how much the Turkish authorities try to suppress the truth, the truth will eventually find its way.”
