Insulting a Woman by Targeting Her Gender is Unacceptable: Arman Tatoyan
The Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, considers it absolutely unacceptable to insult a woman in the context of political or any other discussions, especially by targeting her gender. Tatoyan made this statement on his Facebook page, referring to the recent comments made by MP Karen Sarukhanyan directed at his colleague, MP Sophia Hovsepyan of the "My Step" faction.
“Insulting a woman in the context of political or any other discussions—especially by targeting her gender and doing so in a manner that harms her personal or family life—is absolutely unacceptable. Not to mention how intolerable it is when this is done by a public official who has a direct responsibility to fight against stereotypes and promote the role of women in decision-making,” wrote Tatoyan.
The Human Rights Defender also noted that MP Sophia Hovsepyan has made significant contributions to the implementation of their programs as her colleague. Tatoyan emphasized that women in our society should be treated with dignity and equality.
Earlier, a remote debate had started between MPs Hovsepyan and Sarukhanyan. In an interview, Sarukhanyan addressed Hovsepyan’s comments regarding the closure of the maternity department of the health center in Maralik, stating that she should speak not in gossip but in facts and evidence, adding, “Get married, and it will pass.” This suggestion from Sarukhanyan has drawn discussion and criticism in various circles.
