The U.S. Must Affirm Its Position on the Armenian Genocide: Joe Biden
The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has published the text of a letter sent by former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on September 16, 2019, stating that the U.S. must permanently affirm its position on the Armenian Genocide, as reported by asbarez.com.
“We must never forget or remain silent about these horrific and systematic actions aimed at the destruction of a nation, which led to the deaths of 1.5 million Armenian men, women, and children and the mass displacement of 2 million Armenians. If we fail to fully recognize, commemorate, and tell our children about the genocide, the phrase ‘never again’ will lose its meaning,” Biden wrote.
As a senator, Biden consistently supported issues concerning Armenian Americans and legislative initiatives to recognize the Armenian Genocide. He is also the author of a resolution introduced in 2007, which was unanimously adopted by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, calling for the commemoration of Hrant Dink, an Armenian journalist in Turkey who was killed for speaking out on the issue of the Armenian Genocide.
However, since the Obama-Biden administration took office, it has opposed all processes related to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide during its two terms, continuing to be part of Turkey’s denialist policies.
