Special Forces Mobilized Amid Mass Disturbances in Prisons
According to ArmDaily.am, there is a tense situation currently occurring in Armenia's penitentiary institutions. The cause of the unrest is a new legislative initiative aimed at curbing the activities of 'thieves in law'. This proposed law stipulates criminal liability for granting, obtaining, or maintaining a high rank within the criminal hierarchy, as well as for creating, leading, participating in, and maintaining a criminal subculture.
Specifically, at the Nubarashen penitentiary, a so-called 'zone overseer' has started shouting and banging on doors. The zone overseer, Nver Kirakosyan, declared that he is no longer recognized under the new law, stating that everyone is their own master now, after which disturbances began. As of this moment, the situation inside remains tense, with ongoing riots demanding the rejection of the law.
Currently, special operations are being conducted by 'specnaz' units within the correctional facility. It is noteworthy that disturbances are also spreading to other prisons, with similar situations observed at the Hrazdan correctional facility at this time.
There is a risk of these disturbances propagating throughout the entire system. It is important to note that the greatest danger is expected from Armavir, as it currently houses the largest number of 'thieves in law', with the highest inmate population among correctional facilities.
At this moment, there is no information on whether these protests are spontaneous or organized from some outside center, particularly from beyond the penitentiary system.
