Charges Filed Against Squad Leader in Soldier's Death Case
In connection with the death of conscript soldier V. Galoyan, sufficient evidence has been gathered in the criminal case being investigated by the second garrison investigative department. Charges have been brought against the squad leader for committing a crime as defined under part 2 of Article 358.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, and detention has been selected as a precautionary measure.
As previously reported, on July 23, 2019, around 22:55, while on duty at a combat position in military unit N, conscript soldier Volodya Hamlet Galoyan unlawfully opened fire with an AK-74 type assault rifle in the direction of the squad leader with direct intent to kill. However, Galoyan's crime was not completed due to circumstances beyond his control.
Immediately after firing, Galoyan left the area of the position with his AK-74. Subsequently, on July 24, 2019, around 04:20, Galoyan's body was discovered about 50 meters away from the observation post of the combat position, with a gunshot wound to the lower jaw and his assault rifle lying next to him.
A criminal case has been initiated at the second garrison investigative department under the features of crimes provided for by Articles 34-104 and part 1 of Article 110 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. The investigation is ongoing. Necessary investigative and procedural actions are being carried out to ensure a comprehensive, complete, and objective examination of the case.
