The Supreme Judicial Council Faces Quorum Issues

The newspaper "Hraparak" reports, "Yesterday, there was yet another dismissal in the Supreme Judicial Council with the resignation of member Armen Khachatryan. The authorities are making active efforts to dismantle the council, not realizing the consequences it may have. Earlier, Gagik Harutyunyan and Gevorg Danielyan had also resigned, and there were already two vacant positions before that.

Next in line is Armen Bekhtashyan. After his resignation, there will be only four members left in the council, who hope they will not be pressured to resign as the council must have at least six members to achieve a quorum. The remaining members are Ani Mkhitaryan, Sergey Chichoyan, Hayk Hovhannisyan—who is a friend of the city mayor Marutyan—and Liparit Melikyan.

Even if two members are appointed soon, as a reminder, the members of the council are appointed by the National Assembly through a rather lengthy procedure, the council with six members will only be able to address current and normative issues. However, to impose disciplinary responsibility on judges or to terminate the powers of judges and council members, at least seven members are necessary."
