Armenia Has Not Changed Its Position on the CSTO Secretary General Issue: Rubinyan

As we have reported, the issue of appointing the Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will be decided on May 22 during the meeting of the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council. In response to the issue, the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Relations Committee Ruben Rubinyan stated the following.

“The position of the Armenian side is well known and nothing is changing. The Armenian side has had a position regarding several principles, the main one being that there is essentially a situation where the CSTO Secretary General has ceased to hold that position and it is unclear what is going to happen next, given that there is a rotational principle. We have expressed our position that we are dealing with an unsettled situation – it is necessary to regulate it and it should be done in an operational manner. Our position has also been that according to the rotation, there is a period and that period belongs to Armenia. The discussions have revolved around and continue to revolve around these two principles: Armenia has not changed its position,” he said.

When asked if this means that Armenia will again insist on May 22 that its candidate should assume this position, Rubinyan urged to address that question to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
